Paul was born in Lowestoft, Suffolk, England in 1976. His first musical instrument was a violin, begun at the age of nine. He played one concert with his school orchestra at Boxgrove Priory in West Sussex, and gave up the instrument when his family moved to Chesterfield, Derbyshire, and the orchestra there was too advanced for him to join.
Paul had no more musical involvements until he started writing music on a Commodore Amiga in May 1994, with a sequencing package, Music-X, from the cover disc of a computer magazine. With his brother, Andrew, this project became Foe, which ran until 2002. In a similar vein were Paul's first two solo efforts under the moniker Everdark.
Paul went to university to study artificial intelligence in September of 1994, quitting two terms later as he really hadn't bothered to do a lot of the work, and faced the prospect of either cramming like mad to catch up, or bailing out. The latter option seemed the least work, so in March 1995, Paul went back to live with his parents again, near Alfreton, Derbyshire. Finding himself on the dole, Paul decided to dig out his father's nylon-string acoustic guitar and learn to play. This caught on much better than playing the violin, and before many months had passed, Paul had bought a cheap electric guitar, and started to annoy his family with noise. Very basic guitar riffs and solos started to appear in Foe songs. Paul learned guitar from Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, and the rest was down to experimentation. Once Paul found work, the quality of the equipment started to improve, too.
Paul's guitar playing really got off the ground when a chap called Andi MacDonald became a colleague. Andi was also a guitarist, and there was enough overlap in music taste to make it seem worthwhile getting together. Thus was born Manichae, a band which consumed an increasing amount of Paul's time and money, until their decision to try for a career as a recording band in 2007.
Paul made three solo albums under the name Everdark between 1995 and 2001, and switched to recording under his own name in 2005 as the quality of work was much different from earlier efforts.
Paul plays guitar, bass and keyboards (the latter badly), and acknowledges his non-existent talent at singing, which is the only reason that his solo albums are largely instrumental.
Paul currently lives in Calgary, Alberta.
